If you currently have automobile insurance and received this letter:

If you currently have insurance on the vehicle(s) listed on the letter then there are several possibilities as to why you received this letter. The most common reason is that the information listed on your insurance policy does not match the information listed on your vehicle(s) registration. Another possibility is that the insurance policy that the vehicle is covered by is not a New Mexico policy and therefore is not being reported by the insurance company. Finally the vehicle(s) may be covered by a fleet or commercial policy, if that is the case then those policies do not report all of the vehicles covered under them.

If the VIN on the insurance policy is wrong:

If the VIN on the insurance policy does not match the VIN on the vehicle then you will need to contact your insurance agent and give them the correct VIN to update their records. The insurance agent then may provide temporary proof of insurance through the website and should report the correct policy info electronically to the IIDB.

If the VIN on the registration is wrong:

If the VIN on your vehicle is different than what is on your registration then you will need to have the title and registration corrected. If you live in the state of NM then you will need to take the vehicle, title and registration to a local MVD office for a VIN inspection on your vehicle. Once you receive your VIN inspection you will need to contact the MVD at (505) 383-2315. If you live outside the state of NM, you will need to get a VIN inspection by a State Police Officer in the state you are residing in. Mail the VIN inspection along with a copy of your registration and title with a written request and a phone number in case we need to reach you. Mail those forms to: MVD Financial Responsibility Section, 505 Marquette NW Suite 1500, Albuquerque NM 87102.

If your vehicle is covered under a fleet or commercial policy :

If your vehicle is covered by a fleet or commercial policy that is not vehicle specific then you will need to contact your insurance agent and give them the name that is listed on the letter along with the vehicle information so they can access the program website and identify the vehicle as insured under a commercial policy.

If you do not have automobile insurance:

You must obtain automobile liability insurance from an insurance company that is licensed to do business in the State of New Mexico. Once you obtain insurance, your insurance company will notify the IIDB of your coverage.

If your vehicle is registered in New Mexico, but you are out of state because you are a student, or are in the military, or have insurance issued in another state:

You will be asked to provide proof of insurance. You will then be reflected on the database as insured for the term of your policy. You will need to submit insurance each time you renew that policy with an out of state insurance provider as long as your vehicle registration remains in New Mexico.

Affidavit of Non-Use/Out of State Insurance

If you drive the vehicle and it is not insured, you are subject to license plate confiscation and a citation for no proof of insurance. Make sure that when you drive the vehicle in New Mexico, you have proof of automobile liability insurance in your possession.

If you no longer own the vehicle:

If you no longer own this vehicle please indicate this on the letter, sign and date the letter and mail it to the MVD Financial Responsibility Section at 505 Marquette NW Suite 1500, Albuquerque, NM 87102.
